Here's a fun fact about trees: Some trees have a natural defense mechanism called "allelopathy." Certain types of trees release chemicals into the soil around them to inhibit the growth of competing plants. This helps the tree secure access to essential nutrients and sunlight.

One example is the black walnut tree, which produces a substance called juglone. Juglone can hinder the growth of nearby plants like tomatoes and potatoes. So, in a way, trees have their own way of creating personal space in the forest, ensuring they get the resources they need to thrive!
